John Cabot

Early Life


John Cabot was born in Genoa, Italy. His name was actually Giovanni Caboto. He may have known Christopher Columbus as a young boy, although no records prove they met. When he was about ten years old, Cabot moved with his family to Venice, Italy. At the time, Venice was a great trading center and seaport. Cabot learned the basics of navigation and became a seaman on a trading galley that traveled to ports in the Mediterranean Sea. As a young man in 1476, he took command of his own trading galley.

Where He Explored


He was born in: 1450 and died in 1499. He explored for China and India. They explored either Maine or Canada,they encountered other pirates english patriots and english soldiers. They took 3 ships, 12 trips. He sailed for the chinese emperor and the indian king. He has done four voyages in his life. Then after John Cabot died his son took his place in the voyages across the world. John Cabot's son was named Sebastian Cabot.

Why Was John Cabot Important

John Cabot is so important because he found a new piece of land that nobody found yet and brought a new language to Canada for everyone to speak and learn, which is English.


Why John Cabot's Voyage Was Important

Cabot went to Bristol to make the preparations for his voyage. All that is known about Cabot's first voyage is contained in a letter from John Day to Christopher Columbus. Nearly everything that is known about the 1497 voyage comes from four short letters and a brief chronicle entry. The reason why Cabot wanted to do the voyages is because he needed money.
